Chesuncook Lake House

West Branch of the Penobscot River Canoe Trip

Chesuncook Lake House
Canoe trips start at Lobster Stream or at Roll Dam and pass through Chesuncook Village. The current in the West Branch flows at 3-5 mph and is ideal for beginners. From the village you can continue down Chesuncook Lake or on to the Allagash via Mud Pond carry into the southwestern end of Chamberlain Lake.

  • How long is the trip?
Plan on a minimum of 3 days. Average is 5 days, Monday-Friday is best!

  • Will we see wild animals?
You'll see plenty; moose, deer, black bears, foxes, coyotes, bald eagles, and plenty of waterfowls and birds. Give them plenty of room, and you'll enjoy each others company, they are as curious about you as you are of them. Don't approach them or feed them.

  • How is the fishing?
The West branch is well known for its great fishing, fly, cast, and trolling. Land-locked salmon is at its best here, along with togue, white perch, and a brown trout now and then.

  • Where do we camp?
The state of Maine has camping sites all along the West Branch Corridor. Campsites are well managed by the state and are on a first come first serve basis. If you have a LARGE GROUP, you'll need to make prior reservations with the Maine department of Parks and Lands. Check with them for current campsite fees!

  • How is Chesuncook Lake to paddle?
It can be like glass or you could be windbound for days. If you are on a schedule we recommend a shuttle from the village to your vehicle.

  • What is the weather like?
Count on rain a least one day. Bring a dry set of clothes. Spring and fall can be pretty cold and well... your guess is as good as mine.

  • What do we need to bring?
Whatever you'll need to be comfortable. Food and beverages, all camping gear. We sell provisions at the Lake House and the store in the village sells homemade root beer, fudge, and bread. Make a list and check it over 5 times!

  • Will we get a cell signal there?
Fat chance, don't bother! We have a phone at the Lake House in case of emergencies.

  • Do you rent canoes and kayaks?
Yes we do, by the day or week, each comes with paddles and life vests. We also rent 16' aluminum boats with motors for the lakes and rivers around the village.

  • How do we get back to our vehicle or over to the Allagash?
You can paddle the lake or arrange shuttle with us.
